Takeshi Terauchi – Eleki Bushi 1966-1974
While California had Dick Dale, The Ventures, and The Beach Boys to develop those reverb heavy guitars and vocal surf, Japan had its own master bringing in a taste of post-WWII west side of the lake sound. A meeting between traditional Japanese folk and the sound of ’60s west coast United States. The sound that Takeshi brought out with his band was explosive and intriguing. This wasn’t really much of an accepted thing from the adults in Japan. They were essentially freaking out. freaking out, seeing the electric guitar as a gateway to general societal decay. School boards started banning electric guitars and the instrument gained a delinquent image. Takeshi made it his mission to counter this using the traditional sounds of the country to make a point. This compilation from 2023 covers some of the best works by Takeshi Terauchi, recorded between 1966 and 1974, where the guitar hero looks inwards to Japan for inspiration.

May 7, 2023 12:43 pmI’ve gotta check this out! I have an older compilation of his along with a couple albums I found on questionable torrent sites. Really wish his stuff was easier to find in the states. It always feels like a lost branch of early psychedelica

May 7, 2023 1:08 pmI found out about it from a Reddit post showing off a copy of the vinyl “Eleki Ippon Enka De Shobu” which, from the discussion, sounded super cool. Makes you realize how much wild beautiful, interesting stuff is really out there to be rediscovered.
