The Dismemberment Plan – The Ice of Boston – 1998

Coming out of the late 90s, we have a straight-up indie rock band the likes of Slint, Jawbox, or Fugazi. This EP was my entry into their infectious sound. The album has got some great humorous moments that totally fit their sound. This was the only release they had under the Interscope label.

A four-song EP (of which two songs -- the title track and "Just Like You" -- were previously available), The Ice of Boston is this D.C.-area four-piece's first foray into major-label waters. Still, don't go looking for Top 40 gold. Though the keyboard-enhanced "Spider in the Snow" is one of the group's most delicate and beautiful songs, the Dismemberment Plan's decidedly non-pop, kitchen-sink-and-all approach remains, thankfully, intact.
